So after trying A.Chris’ Sanyo Bread Maker creatively with much success the last few weeks, Mom decided it was time to get one her own.
**
Before I continue, I must say that I had much, much benefitted from her creative works with the Sanyo machine. Apart from the normal white bread, she also baked wholemeal bread and cinnamon/walnut/raisin bread, chocolate bread, potato bread and a few others. The thing I liked most about mom’s breads are that they are 1) without milk – we’re both lactose-intolerant, and VFui has been ordered off milk until he gets the doc’s clearance; 2) without sugar – we used organic molasses sometimes as a healthier alternative; 3) healthy – with lots of organic stuff; 4) totally awesome to eat!!
**
And I’m not the only one who benefitted from mom’s works. EuT and RT and Mctc and RD and VFui and En and a whole host of other people had had the privilege of savoring the fruits of her labors. In fact, EuT and Mctc gobbled up almost whole bread that was fresh out the oven once. Also, I’m sure Anne would agree with me that the people in the office got to taste the great-looking, delicious bread as well.
**
And so it was decided that we help mom find her own Bread Maker. We found that Sanyo is not selling here, at least not in Sbn. Some say that the Sanyo brand is only sold in S’pore today. Anyway, we heard lots of people rave about this Kenwood brand – and after reading some glowing reviews over the net about it, we decided that it would be the best brand to get, after the unattainable Sanyo.
**
And so, Mom got a Kenwood BM350. It looked so cool, with its stainless steel exterior and its many ultra high-tech looking buttons.
**
And then Mom tried out the first bread – a wholemeal one.
**
Alas! It didn’t work out. The bread looked bad and actually tasted sour! What happened?
**
She baked again. And again, it turned out bad. She baked a third time – hmmm…the white bread seemed to come out alright. She tried the wholemeal again. But with the same original disastrous results!
**
After a couple more grievous tries, she finally called it quits and wanted to return the whole unit to the shop or, failing which, cast it forever into the deepest recesses of the Storeroom!
**
It was then that Yours Truly stepped in and said, “Let me try it!” Mom stepped aside and I baked my first bread on this Kenwood BM350 machine. It turned out to be a more perfect [if there is such a phrase!] white bread than Mom’s! Hurrah for me! High on my success, I tried the wholemeal recipe almost immediately.
**
It turned out something like this…
**
It was a thorough flop. “Take it back to the supplier’s,” I said, convinced beyond a shadow of doubt that it is the machine and not me.
**
And so, Mom went back to the shop today, and got a new unit. Apparently the original one had a fan/heater problem. That’s why the wholemeal recipe (and several other ones) could not turn out. The service man will be coming within 2 days’ time to check and test the new unit, and to “teach” Mom how to correctly use the unit.
**
Meanwhile, unwilling to starve ourselves till then, we’ve meekly gone over to the supermarket and bought a basketful of normal bread – to tide ourselves over the next two days…
**
Here’s hoping that there will be healthy-eating, great-tasting bread again sometime in the near future…

“Alisa’s back! Alisa’s back!” went the cries of En for the past few days. Her excitement over the visit from her cousin from Sabah was palpable. Mom decided to call for a Yeoh Clan family gathering on Sunday. It was the week before the Mid-Autumn festival, and so the timing was good for yet another party…
**
**
So, it was a great time of Fun and Fellowship again. These “makan” times are all very addictive. The Yeoh Clan does it as often as possible, and on the slightest excuses, too! Good Food, Great Family. What else can one ask for, ya?

She Made It At Last!! July 31, 2008

July 31st, 2008
It was my parents’ second time to Kepayang Hill The first time they went was last November. Mom made it to the KM1 mark, thereafter she immediately went into nausea-mode and could not go any further.
It wasn’t until about 3 months back that she started going for morning walks with my dad. After MUCH nagging persuasion from us her daughters as well as the aunties her sisters. She and dad would walk about 30-45 minutes daily, and would stop right before 7 in the morning. As expected, her health generally improved after that, and she and my dad were able to go on more vigorous vacations in the last month without tiring out too soon.
Today, mom and dad decided to follow EuT and I to our regular Thursday Morning Exercise place – Kepayang Hill [where else, right?]. EuT and I were worried. Can mom really make it? Will she be dizzy again? Will she ignore [again!] our suggestions not to go too fast too soon?
Needless fears, all of those! For mom went ALL THE WAY UP Kepayang Hill today. All 1.5kms of it. She made it to the top. She Summitted. HOORAY for her!!!!
It Was 4.34 in the Morning… July 29, 2008

July 29th, 2008
It was 4.34am. I woke up with a start. The phone was ringing. I got up, fumbled a bit and finally located the phone. I picked it up.
My Dad’s voice was heard over the other line. He, my mom, my uncle and aunt had just returned from their vacation in Penang. They took the night coach back from the island, and were now at the Bus Terminal of our town. I was to pick them up.
I sped through my toilet, got into my car, and drove off.
The streets were devoid of any sign of life. But for the street lights and shops’ night lights, one would never have known it wasn’t a dead town.
It was the first time I was to experience having the road all to myself. And so with glee, I stepped on the accelerator and hit 85km/hr. On the road that’s busiest in town. Yipppeeeee!!!
Oh wait a minute – there seems to be some red spots in the horizon…..oh Crap! It’s a Red Light!
And so I pressed the brakes and stopped. While I stopped, I got my camera out and captured a little of what I was seeing. Here it is…
I came back, after sending both couples to their homes, at 5.30am. There was still time left to sleep a little before starting the day – and so I did just that. ZZZZzzzzzzzzz….

Peter Pan and the Pirates in celebration with the kids
[It was a time of sun and fun, and hunt and guns]
It was May26th, 9 days after Brian’s real birthday. While a lot of people in the Asian world have superstitious qualms about celebrating a birthday after the fact, the Yeoh clan hadn’t. In fact, plans were made for the birthday to be late, due to the fact that too many kids had exams the week before, and that Brian’s cousin Joelle from Canada would only be arriving back to Malaysia 2 days before the 26th.
The thematic deco at the place was the superlative work of the birthday boy’s grandmother, AChris, as well as three of his aunts, SFam, RT and EuT.
The cartoon characters drawn out of pre-sawn plywood, as well as the cardboard pirate’s ship, made the whole place feel like Peter’s Neverland. The doorgift eye patch was one-of-a-kind.
The kids added to the tone of the day by mostly coming in costumes of pirates, fairies, pixies, crocodiles, Wendy and Indians. A vigorous Peter Pan Treasure Hunt, a pirate fight between the girls and the boys, an adventurous walk on the plank and a thrilling flour fight above the croc creek completed the exhilarating time for them.
The thematic day concluded with hitting a treasure chest pinata and blowing the candles off a pirate ship cake. It was a grand day indeed for Brian and his friends.
